Routes through the Twentieth Century Architecture of Andalucia: INTRODUCTION

The xx century can not be understood as the development of one determined tendency, and much less by the predominance of a single style - even the concept of style is shattered -. All the arts, including architecture, are subjected to accelerated transformations which result in a very extensive, heterogeneous field of experiences.

In architecture, the idea of progress and the slow degression from academic architecture, which was based on the naturalness of the classical order, lead to the constitution of modern architecture. It is characterized by it's a-historicity and a new Renaissance of the
architectonic project. It is far from the formal historicist repertoire of the previous century.
Generally speaking, one can detect three stages in this century. In the first, the modern van~uardisms coalesce with the late historicist experiences. The second stage is a period of growing support and diffusion for the new architecture. Finally, in the current stage one can simultaneously detect the signs of decadence and the growing complexity of the vanguardist proposals. During this century, Andalusia has progressed from a strong academicist inertia, which impeded it's complete incorporation into the vanguardist movements, to an advanced position in the contemporary European architecture.

It is difficult to select routes which are characterized by determined architectural forms. As a result, we have grouped the most outstanding buildings, in the most representative tendencies which are present in Andalusia's twentieth century architecture. Historicism, Modernism, and Modern Architecture will encompass all of the works, which we will supplement with the inclusion of Engineering works, and the architecture of the great Andalusian Expositions (The Iberoamerican exposition of 1929, and the Universal Exposition of 1992).
