| ALMAGRO was the
head of the military order of Calatrava. The Fugers, German bankers
summoned by Charles V, settled in the town. These two factors led
to AImagro's expansion. From the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries
the town had a university. In terms of monuments, the most interesting
feature is the asymmetrical Plaza Mayor, with a portico of Tuscan
columns and glazing on the two upper storeys. The square is home
to the Palacio Maestral and the Corral de Comedias, from the sixteenth
century and where the international theatre festival is held each
year. The Museo del Teatro has interesting collections related to
this artistic field. The Asuncion convent, with its Gothic church
and Renaissance courtyard, the Santo Domingo church and convent,
and the Jesuitas church add to the town's historical and artistic
monuments.
