The region of Murcia
covers some 11,314 square kilometres and is one of the seven Spanish
regional autonomous communities which is comprised of only one single
province. It is located in the south east, between Castile, Andalusia
and the former kingdom of Valencia. It is on the coast and depends
in part on the sea and the natural ports that line its coast, but
it is also a region that is crossed by the roads that lead to the
sea, to the inland plateaux and to the high mountain ranges of eastern
Andalusia. This explains why all the civilisations that have settled
in the Iberian Peninsular at some point in history have left their
mark in Murcia, in cave paintings, Hannibal's elephants, numerous
Iberian sculptures, hidden early Christian monuments or Byzantine
city walls.
