| It was consecrated
in 1288. The ground plan is inspired by the cathedral in Reims,
though the personality of the pulchra leonina presents various peculiarities.
It is smaller than the French temple. The main area is made up of
three naves, with five in the transept. The ambulatory has five
chapels. The roofing comprises elegant quadripartite ribbed vaults,
some of them renovated in the nineteenth century. The supports are
pillars with slender half columns. The main front has a triple portico
with very pointed arches. The central section is modern. The towers
had to wait until the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries to be completed. The
facade of most sculptural value is perhaps the west front, dedicated
to the Last Judgement, presided over by Jesus Christ on high displaying
the wounds of the Passion. Angels hold the Redeemer's instruments
of suffering. At the ends of the facade are the Virgin and St John.
In the lintel, St Michael weighs souls; his figure acts as a separation
between the damned and the blessed. |
