| The Zabalaga farmhouse,
dating to the 16th century and which contains a hundred of works,
was in ruins when it was purchased by Chillida in 1982. It has now
beeo restored as if the building its'elf were a sculpture. The interior
was emptied; natural light steams in through a huge ' glass door and
oak beams make up the building's framework. Chillida-Leku is the outcome
of a lifelong dream for the artist: to create a space which would
be appropriate for his work and where it could be permanentty on display.
This museum is a faithful representation of the artist's sculptural
development and progress over a 50-year period. The spacious gardens
surrounding the building an old 16th-century farmhouse, have been
made into an authentic outdoor museum thanks to the more than 40 carefully-placed
sculptures.
