This is a city with
Greek and Roman roots, although the population originates from the
settlement founded by the Muslims in the eighth century on the site
of one of the present-day districts. At the beginning of the twentieth
century, Alicante only had 50.000 inhabitants, but this number doubled
as the century progressed, demonstrating the rise of this city, where
the standard of Jiving improves daily. The Paseo de la Explanada de
Espaiia is the main reference point of cosmopolitan life in Alicante,
in its tourism and in its commerce. Parallel to it, the Paseo Marltimo,
with its rows of palm trees, marvellous light, colourful scenes and
pleasant temperature for most of the year, was built in 1823 on the
site of the old walls, although its present-day layout is the result
of the modification carried out in 1955. The Town Hall is a Baroque
eighteenth-century palace with three stone doorways in the main facade
and two square towers.
