MADRID tourist information

Madrid is the capital of the kingdom and the seat of the court of the King of Spain. The city is full of places that have borne close witness to the activities of the Crown throughout the years. and of buildings related to the various dynasties in Spain.

Madrid

Plaza de Esparia is an excellent departure point for starting a trip around the Oriente Palace (Palacio de Oriente). an urban landscape that sums up a good part of the history of the Crown from the 16th century onwards. and which is a vantage point for looking out over the wide open space of the Casa de Campo. Visitors can start their walk by going down Bailen Street and skirting the Sabatini Gardens. a fine example of a French garden created during the 1930s in memory of the person who undertook the work on the royal stables next to the palace. The Senate stands on the other side of the road from the gardens. looking out onto beautiful views of the sunset. The old building once used as the Upper house has recently been enlarged. It dates from the 16th century. stands in the nearby Marina Espariola Square (Plaza de la Marina Espanola) and was originally a School of Humanities. run by the Augustine order whose church became the Session Hall for Parliament.

At number 9 in this square is the Marques de Grimaldi Palace. built at the end of the 18th century and whose main feature is the great staircase designed by Sabatini. This great house was the dwelling place of Godoy. and then housed. in turn. the Naval Ministry. the Naval Museum and the Museum of the Spanish People. At present, it is the seat of the library for Constitutional Studies. The convent of Las Reparadoras is close by in Torija Street, reminding us of the times when it housed the tribunal of the Inquisition. A little further on. the Cafe de Chinitas opens its doors in welcome.
