ARAGON Information: THE
PROVINCE OF ZARAGOZA - ZARAGOZA VILLAGES |

ZARAZONA is one of those brilliant ancient towns
that manages to enhance its beauty through a combination of monuments
and landscape, which in this case is due to the proximity of the Moncayo.
This is a town with a famous juderia or Jewish quarter, and a strong
Morisco presence, visible in the amount of Mudejar buildings, which
only Teruel can eclipse.
The cathedral is the most definitive statement of thirteenth-century
Aragonese Gothic art, although a major fire and the Mudejar renovation
prevent the original work from being seen. Cistercian sobriety is
evident at the head of the church. The Mudejar dome lantern is from
the sixteenth century, but the most intesting element is the cloister,
from the early sixteenth century, with a predominance of Mudejar over
Gothic. The plaster work in the lattice elements is particularly beautiful.
The Renaissance sculptures in the Town Hall allude to the coronation
of Charles V, making use of the mythological battles of Hercules.
Churches and civic buildings add to the urban layout of a highly interesting
town.
In NUEVALOS stands the Cistercian Santa Maria de
Piedra monastery, founded in the twelfth century and provided with
major economic resources. Today, it is one of the sites most visited
by tourists, due to the beautiful scenery of poplar groves, woods
and the flow of the River Piedra, particularly the 50-metre Cola de
Caballo waterfall. Some of these spectacles are the result of the
irregular formation of the terrain, whereas others are the result
of engineering. A hotel, built in the former dependencies of the monastery,
adds to the site's tourist attraction.
The old part of CALATAYUD is declared a site of artistic-historical
interest. One of its most noteworthy monuments is the Santa Maria
collegiate church, one of the highpoints of Mudejar architecture in
Aragón. The tower was added in the sixteenth century; the plateresque
church front is the work of Juan de Talavera and Esteban de Obray.
The town has an interesting fortified enclosure from the mid to late
ninth century, unique in its genre and with an alcazaba, three secondary
fortresses in the lower area and a large tower.
DAROCA is a historic town protected by its walls
measuring around four kilometres, with several towers and two beautiful
gates that lend atmosphere to a visit. This was a Muslim fortress
to defend the Taifa kingdom of Zaragoza, and it has preserved this
military character well. At the end of the twelfth century, stones
began to be cut from the quarries for the Santa Maria, San Juan and
San Miguel churches, in accordance with the Romanesque aesthetic style,
with Moriscos continuing the work in brick. Daroca is renowned for
the eucharistic miracle of los corporales, which occurred in 1236.
The safekeeping of the relic led to the construction of "the
superb piece of gilded silver" by Pere Moragues, the foot of
which resembles that of the chalices, and the main section a two-tier
altarpiece. To house such a reliquary, Ferdinand and Isabelia built
a chapel in the Santa Marfa collegiate church, lavishly decorated
with arches and the monarchs' coats of arms.
