ARAGON Information: THE
PROVINCE OF TERUEL |
In the streets and buildings of ALBARRACIN, declared
a national monument, there is a strong medieval atmosphere, with beautiful
Gothic constructions, bordered by a wall that climbs up and down the
sharp crags and the oldest part of which dates back to the tenth century.
It was built by the Berbers known as Banu Razin, who gave the town
its name. From the same period is the Andador tower, a watchtower
outside the walled area. The ancestral homes and the interesting popular
architecture, made up of streets so narrow that their roof tiles are
almost touching, are enriched by magnificent wrought iron work forged
at local smithies. The town's artistic heritage is enhanced by houses
emblazoned with coats of arms; the town hall, from the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries; the Salvador cathedral, begun in the thirtee
nth and completed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; and
former juderfa or Jewish quarter, together with spectacular scenery
at the source of the Tagus and where the Guadalaviar curves round
the mountain on which the town sits.
The former castle protects and dominates ALCAÑIZ,
the capital and strategic point of Lower Aragón. Begun in the
twelfth century, it has lost none of its importance throughout history.
Today, it is a parador de turismo, one of the state-run chain of hotels.
In the castle keep an interesting collection of frescos from the fourteenth
century can be seen, exalting the world of chivalry.
