The Picos de Europa national park covers 24.560 hectares in Asturias,
Cantabria and Leon. Modern times have mythologised this area replete
with water, peaks, gorges, forests and fields, unbeatable for walkers
and climbers. The Celts considered these mountains divine, and for
the Christians the reconquest began with a special intervention from
la Santina, the Virgin of Covadonga. Her shrine, in an area of great
natural beauty and inaugurated in 1901, is a mixture of styles.
The Covadonga mountain national park was the first of its kind in
Spain. An unforgettable itinerary joins the shrine with the Enol and
Ercina lakes, with some stunning changes in light, particularly in
summer.

A point of land, jutting
out into the Cantabrian Sea with two inlets at its sides, explains
the seduction and the history of Gijon, the largest city in Asturias.
The Roman baths by Campo Valdes date from the first century. Still
possible to make out are the hipocaustum, for heating the water, and
the frigidarium, where the cold baths were located. The site conserves
paintings from the 2nd century. The sculpture of Augustus, ennobled
by Campo Valdes, pays homage to the passing of Rome through this area.
The 7th century Palacio Valdes is a typical Asturian mansion, with
2 towers and classicist stone work in part of the facade. In the Palacio
de Revillagigedo, the constructor made use of a Gothic tower from
the 15th century and built a second, classicist tower in keeping with
the times.
The end of the point of land is formed by the Cerro de Santa Catalina.
Previously used for military purposes, it's now The Atalaya park,
featuring a sculpture by Eduardo Chillida. |
