ASTURIAS Information: ASTURIAS VILLAGES

CANGAS DE ONIS, the first capital of reconquered Spain, contains some ancient monuments, such as the Santa Cruz hermitage, which tradition states was built in the fifth century on a Celtic dol men; or el Puentón, a bridge with a medieval appearance over the River Sella, with a surrounding landscape of forests and mountains. To the north-west, near Navia, the Celtic Noaiia settlement conserves around eighty dwellings built using stone, with some of the walls reaching up to four metres in height. The cobbled streets and water supply system have also survived.

CANGAS DE NARCEA conserves the Renaissance Palacio de Omaña, the Collegiate Church, the Palacio de los Con des de Toreno, from the late seventeenth century, and a high street with
houses from the same period. Part of the town's municipal area is made up of the Muniellos forest, a nature park with the most important oak wood in the Iberian Peninsula (the carbayu or oak has a special significance in the Principality of Asturias). The Somiedo nature park feeds the highest and largest lakes in the region, is home to grouse, and contains half the population of brown bears in the Iberian Peninsula.

The neighbourhoods of LUARCA are separated by the arms of the River Negro, with traditional architecture and ancestral homes such as the Palacio Ferrera, which contains elements dating from the thirteenth century.

CUDILLERO is one of the most beautiful towns in Asturias. The upper part is given over to farming, the lower to the sea. The steep streets and the colour of the houses make for some superb views.

The iron and steel industry has made AVILES the third largest town in the Principality, but despite such development it has lost none of its flavour. The streets are full of Romanesque church fronts, such as San Nicolas and San Francisco, or combine palaces and chigres (places where cider is sold or drunk). The pilgrims' road to Santiago de Compostela passed through Aviles.
