MENORCA Information: MENORCA PREHISTORIC MONUMENTS

The prehistoric monuments in the Balearics have a personality all their own. As with all the islands, Menorca has several megaliths, though exclusive to the island are the taulas and navetas. A taula is a huge stone slab placed horizontally on a vertical stone in the form of a table; there is only one in each town or village. Navetas look like an upturned building; they are made of relatively even stones, with a chamber inside that is sometimes big enough to be divided into three naves separated by pillars.

Menorca is thought to have over 1,500 archaeological sites of this type. In the area surrounding Mahon there are two of particular importance: Trepucó, with a giant monolithic taula, and the Talatí de Dalt taula (one of the most important), to the west.
Near Ciutadella are three important archaeological sites: the Tudons naveta (the best conserved of all), the Torrellafuda taula and the Torre Trencada settlement.
