MAJORCA Information: OTHER TOWNS AND MAJORCA VILLAGES

VALLDEMOSSA. Around 20 kilometres from Palma, and despite the fact that the village is no higher than 400 metres above sea level, the nearby peaks and surrounding Mediterranean vegetation of carob, almond and olive trees create a micro-climate that is particularly agreeable on summer nights. Perhaps these circumstances were what led King James II of Majorca, in 1276, to build a summer palace, which has not survived. Artists and travellers have chosen this place to make their.. home, the most notable being the writer George Sand and the musician Chopin, who spent the winter of 1838-39 in the Real Cartoixa de Jesus de Nazaret. Chopin's piano is still kept there. The sixteenthcentury cloister has become a concert hall for piano festivals held in the summer. There is also a small museum exhibiting contemporary art. The bell tower has a pretty tiled roof and is well worth taking in.

Both the layout and the architecture of the village give off an air of popular charm. The area has some beautiful and highly varied scenery.

ALCUDIA. With its privileged position between the Pollenya and AIcudia bays, this has been a prominent town throughout history. Roman remains from the first and second century, and a walled enclosure that is "among the most beautiful to be seen in Spain", built in the early fourteenth century (though later renovated), are the most visible signs of the past. There are also some enviable beaches. At the northernmost end, beyond the bay of Pollenya, is the Formentor cape, a twelve-kilometre backbone of rock. The north face is a craggy cliff dropping into the sea, whereas the southern side is much gentler, with pine forests, coves and beaches.
