GALICIA Information - THE FEUDALISM TOWERS

In the upper medieval world, the Suebis contributed to creating an administrative network based on parishes. Hierarchies with established power grew up, and little by little, watch towers were built, strategically located, and a symbol of presence, power and resistance. Towns grew up around what had been Castreño settlements and parishes, which were shaped in medieval times into Tui, Mondoiiedo, Ribadivia, Monforte, Allariz, Viveiro, Betanzos or Pontedeume.

In the medieval period, strong fortresses were built and consolidated, such as the Soutomaior fortress, of the much-feared Pedro Madruga, Sobroso looking out over 0 Condado and Mondariz, Castro Caldelas, Monterrei overlooking Verin, Pambre, Moeche, Naraío, Pontedeume, Vimianzo, Caldaloba, Vilalba, Alfoz, Doiras or Monforte de Lemos. The birthplace of lineages that spread over the peninsula and America: the Andrade family, the Ulloas, the Zuñigas, the Taobados, the Fonsecas, the Martelos, the Pardo de Celas and the Sotomayors. Watch towers over which, after time and in the fifteenth century, the slaves of the land - the Irmandiños - were to take their revenge, reducing those towers to piles of rubble, memories and legend.

In this context, Renaissance art entered the scene in a period dominated by the Catholic Monarchs. The Royal Hospital of Santiago, now a hostel, the Plateresque facade of Santa Maria dos Mareantes in Pontevedra or the Colegio del Cardenal Rodrigo de Castro in Monforte are prototypes of the moment, works representing an art that looks towards the creators in the Italian peninsula. On the facade of the Church of Monfero, balance is sought between Renaissance and Baroque style, as on the facades of the churches of the monasteries of Celanova or Montederramo.
