GALICIA Provinces - PONTEVEDRA |

|
PONTEVEDRA. The origin of the city,
situated at the beginning of the ria that bears its name, is explained
by the numerous petroglyphs, or rock-carvings, that are found in the
surroundings and give evidence of early settlements. However, it is
not until the 12th century that documented references prove the relevance
of Pontevedra to the history of Galicia and the Peninsula.
The city thrived, a commercial bourgeoisie developed and a number
of monasteries of the Franciscans, Dominicans and St. Clare orders
were built and now are part of its artistic patrimony. Pontevedra
went through a period of intense activity during the 16th century,
but had to cope with the dangers which came from the sea. In spite
of this, the city managed to build the splendid Church of Santa Marfa
la Mayor. Another Church, the Virgen Peregrina, was built in the 18th
century and both are the city's most significant monuments.
The city's cultural life is enriched by the Pontevedra Museum, which
contains different collections of art and archeology from all periods,
with particular emphasis on Galician examples. It also includes a
library and archive. The buildings lie in the old part of the city,
which is endowed with an exceptional charm. |
