LUGO. Lugo was the
only town in Galicia to enjoy the status of capital of a legal department
during Roman rule. The walls, with a perimeter of two thousand metres
and numerous round turrets, date from that time. In spite of later
restorations, they are the best walled enclosure from Roman times
in Spain. Also from that time is the bridge which crosses the River
Mino and two halls belonging to a thermal spa on the riverside.
Within the walls, the most significant streets and squares are found,
along with the main monuments. The prime work is the cathedral, which
enjoys the privilege of having the Blessed Host continually displayed,
and this is why Lugo is known as the City of the Sacrament. The cathedral
was begun in 1129. Different maestros took part in the construction
and the nave and aisles were not concluded until the 13th century.
The northern doorway is notable for its splendid Pantocrator and the
pendant, which depicts the Last Supper. Both pieces are the best of
the Romanesque sculptures in Lugo. The old Monastery of San Francisco,
which preserves a sober mediaeval cloister, has been converted into
a provincial Museum and holds important collections of Galician painting
and of goldwork from the castros. The attached church along with the
Santo Domingo Church rank among the main works in the so-called Mendicant
Gothic.
The City Hall, some old mansions, displaying coats of arms, and other
churches complete the city's artistic heritage. Lugo has recently
undergone considerable development that has strengthened its position
as the capital city of the largest Galician province. The province
itself has an important farming and cattle-raising production and
extraordinary tourist possibilities.
