GALICIA Information - GALICIA
LEISURE AND SPORT |

|
The Galician people are famed as hard
workers, but it is also true that they enjoy themselves as no one
else does. Galicia, thanks to its geographical features and the work
of countless sports clubs, offers all kinds of entertainment and the
possibility to enjoy almost every sport.
The winding, ragged coastline, measuring over 1,220 km, with its 750
beaches and 23 marinas, gives one plenty of opportunities to do any
kind of water sport. Sailing, rowing and speedboat racing, either
at local, national or international level, give the rias a merry atmosphere
during the summer. And the windsurf sails skirt around the beaches
all year long. Surfing is also practised by amateurs throughout the
year and so is underwater fishing. Since 1988, international contests
have attracted the best surfers who enter for European championships.
Other water sports may be practised, like canoeing, taking advantage
of the inter
national descent of the Mino, and rafting in the rapids of the River
Deza and in the course of the River Mino through the Condado. These
bring together the enjoyment of the sport and the wonder of marvellous
scenery. Others enjoy the landscape by para gliding, trekking and
mountain-bike or horse touring. There are marked routes for trekking,
combining nature with a visit to historical-artistic monuments, while
some routes can comfortably be followed in organized groups.
During the winter, skiers can go to the Cabeza de Manzaneda resort.
For brevity, we will only point aut that there are 51 sports federations
registered in the Secretaria General para el Deporte. The first one
to be registered was the Golf Federation, which owns several courses
in Galicia, like "La Zapateira" in A Cormia, the "Real Aero Club"
in Vigo, and the courses in Santiago de Compostela and in the Isle
of A Toxa. Brand new Golf courses have recently been opened in Domaio
(Pontevedra) and Montealegre (Ourense). Finally, we will mention fishing,
for anglers find Galicia a paradise which spreads along the thousand
five hundred Kilometres of salmon and trout rivers. In the field of
spectator sports, football has to be mentioned in the first place,
with tournaments as important as the one held in A Coruna, the Teresa
Herrera Trophy, the oldest of this kind of tournaments in Spain. On
the cultural scene, musical events range from select musical concerts
in Compostela or the Galician Orchestra, to big shows are held at
A Coruna Coliseum or Castrelos Park in Vigo. The seven main cities
have modem facilities for meetings, exhibitions and concerts. Among
them, the Galicia Auditorium in Santiago and the conference centres
in A Coruna, Santiago and Pontevedra. Accommodation is wide and varied,
from the big 5-star hotels and the paradores, situated in historical
buildings, to the smaller, modem hostels, pazos and farm houses of
rural tourism. They are well distributed, similarly to the Galician
population, with a higher concentration along the coastal areas. |
