Curious, impertinent and illustrated
travellers in the 18th century travelled all round Galicia, exploring
its universe: Feijoo, Sarmiento and Cornide are examples that would
give way to nineteenth-century forerunners like Murguia, husband of
Rosalia Castro, a marriage that perfectly symbolized Romantic Historicism
- the search for roots, identity and authentic local feeling. Cities
like Vigo and A Coruña received and encouraged that feeling
which was to grow with the shipping industry, the banks and everything
involved in emigration to Cuba and Buenos Aires. They were years of
literary splendour, with Eduardo Pondal or Curros Enriquez. A Coruña
was the 11 Marineda 11 of la Pardo Bazan, a city of back room discussions
and intellectual cliques, where a child who was later to revolutionize
the world moved, learned and took shape - Pablo Picasso.
In towns and the surroundings of cities we can find the solemn "Indiano"
homes, commissioned by rich emigrants, such as the Moreno house in
Ribadeo. Architects like Antonio Palacios Gonzalez de Villar, the
Uchas, Jenaro de la Fuente or Gomez Roman were to find Regionalist
paths in Modernism to create their new architecture. Ourense, Lugo
and Pontevedra show us their constructions with the same feeling.
The Votive Church of the Sea in Panxon, the Virgen de la Roca in Baiona
or, in Carballiño, the Church of Veracruz, works by Antonio
Palacios, perfectly portray that sensitivity of Galician quests which
can also be found in the "Nos" generation, especially Castelao
with his essays on Galicia. Pathways to contemporary style were opened,
followed by Maside and later by Seoane and Díaz Pardo, both
creators of the "industries of the memory" in the O Castro
and Sargadelos ceramics, under the reflection of tradition and modernity,
art and industry.
Contemporary architects like Bar Boo, Albalat or Baltar, introduced
a new mentality to the younger generations, where Cesar Portela, Manuel
Gallego or lago Seara belonged. They are characterized by rationalization
and re-creation of traditional theories, seeking functionality and
sculptural aesthetics in their buildings within the minimalism of
our time. This process does not stop with plastic creation - the sculpture
of Asorey, the surrealist painting of the Atlantic by Urbano Lugris;
Laxeiro painted the "Trasmundo ", a work with spirit, as
Colmeiro or Torres were inspired by the suggestive world of folk traditions.
All creative process is inter-related at present in Galicia - the
architecture and literature have come to a surprising moment. The
existence of works by architects like Siza (responsible for the CGAC
and the new Journalism Faculty, both buildings in Santiago de Compostela),
Isozaki, Foster, and sculptors like Chillida
and Ibarrola, are proof of this enthusiasm open to all innovation.
