HISTORIC ART |

Galicia, at the western end of Europe,
the "Finis Terrae", looks out over the Atlantic and the
galaxies of the cosmos, from rocky balconies of myths and legends.
Rock is everything in Galicia - its very essence: its ground, its
homes, its altars and its tombs. The past and the future come together,
exploring old, worn-down paths, carved by the footsteps of pilgrims,
adventurers, travellers, people with a desire to experience this immense
sanctuary, and pay homage to all that is represented by the union
of nature's miracle with a long history. The enamelled, ribbed scallop
is its finest symbol. Enter Galicia's history and feel it - and as
you discover it and come to love it, it grows more mysterious and
magical. This is the feeling transmitted by the prehistoric labyrinths
carved in stone, ancient altars with enigmatic symbols that look over
horizons of seas and mountains where the sun goes down every twilight.
Galicia's coasts open onto the sea in a series of rias, small inland
waterways where the swell grows calm among islands. In other places,
the coast becomes rugged with rocks of great geological value, and
the raging Atlantic waves breaking on high cliffs: Nariga, Roncudo,
Tourifian, San Andres de Teixido, Ortegal or As Catedrais. Hills and
valleys where herds, or "greas ", of wild horses and cows
gallop in the wind. Currents of water that cascade down in turbulent
waterfalls of legend, streams that flow along valley floors to create
fertile "ribeiros". Humanized landscapes from Roman and
Medieval times, stepped hillsides formed by stone walls, the "socalcos",
used for growing vines.
