FERROL. Although the
castros point to the existence of an ancient settlement, Ferrol only
developed when the Bourbons established it as the Headquarters of
a Navy Department in 1726. This decision brought military engineers
to the town who looked after its planning and were responsible for
its most outstanding buildings: Arsenal de A Grana, the castles of
the ria, the Esteiro shipyard, the Magdalena and also the Churches
of St. Julian, San Francisco, etc... All this makes Ferrol an eminently
Neoclassical town. Those responsible for the achievements also made
their contributions to other towns in Galicia, which in this way benefited
from the new approaches developed in Ferrol. The military, the shipyards,
and the shipbuilding sector in general, have marked the face of this
active town.
