Galicia Information - Natural
Parks: Cova da Rei Cintolo |

|
LOCATION: Mondonedo Council (Lugo), Supena parish, town of
Argomoso.
SURFACE AREA: 7,500 metres long over three galleries.
ACCESS: 6.5 km from Mondonedo along the local road from the
Os Muiñs neighbourhood.
SERVICES: In Mondonedo. We enter a unique natural cave with
a labyrinthine structure, and consequently with multiple possibilities.
Seven and a half kilometres of explored length distributed over three
main galleries, of Karstic origin, through slate-based terrain giving
it geological personality apart from such characteristic formations
as columns of stalactites and stalagmites and other typical karstic
oddities. Maximum drop is about 75 metres, with internal water running
into several lakes and the subterranean current of the River Celtas
along the lower part. This is the sanctuary, somewhere between science
and legend, of Galician pot-holing.
The legendary power of its name has recently become a tourist resource.
The construction of a cave visitor's centre is planned next to its
only entrance, together with the opening to the public of the central
section with good horizontal conditions for a visit of about 300 metres,
return trip. What is more, out in the sunlight, the exterior landscape
is equally impressive. The "water trekking route" joins
the original Mondoñedo neighbourhood of Os Muiños with
the Rei Cintolo Cave via the Lavapes Mill and the Coro Waterfall on
the River Valiñadares.
FAUNA: A refuge for several bat species (Rhynolophus,
Myotis...) and interesting invertebrate colonies: the cave's interior
has produced some crustaceans unique in the peninsula's north-west.
