GALICIA Information - BAROQUE GALICIA

It was always said that Galicia is the country where Romanesque and Baroque cover everything. This Baroque influence lies in the contrasts caused by light and shade, in the dynamic shapes, in polychrome alternation, in hues and in perspectives. Baroque is in everything, in traditional costume and tools, in the sharp tones of the bagpipes and the "hurdy gurdy" fading away among the oak forests and the mist, in the sea of the rias, in the literary depth of writers like Otero Pedrayo.

Compostela perfectly sums up this feeling which can also be seen on the facade of the Obradoiro. A play on symmetries, volutes, horizontal and vertical lines and reliefs. All this is complemented by the rain, and the gargoyles of San Martiño Pinario vomit the water that falls. The cloisters and retables of Celanova, Samos and its fountain of sea nymphs among the myrtle. Churches in the province of Ourense like As Ermidas in O Bolo or Santa María de Entrimo; the Monastery of Poio in the area of Pontevedra with the tomb of St. Trahamunda, patron saint of home-sickness and of emigrants; San Salvador de Lourenza in the province of Lugo - all monasteries with a flavour of Baroque. Baroque is in everything in Galicia, and allies well with traditions, inseparable from the Galician landscape, where they still know how to understand the nostalgic parochial language. Around the Compostela chapter and its cathedral, the Baroque of plaques appeared, inspired by the art of marquetry and transferred to architecture, as done by Fernandez Sarela in the Chapterhouse in the Plaza de Platerias in Compostela, and especially by Simon Rodriguez in the facade of the Convent of Santa Clara de Santiago. Similarly, Ferro Caaveiro, responsible for the Lugo Town Council building, who also worked on the chapel and walls of the Pazo de Oca. Aesthetic works which take us back to the illustrated ethics of a nobility anxious to discover and experiment.
