GALICIA Information - ANCIENT DOLMENS

Our proud ancestors from over four thousand years ago, in their desire to domesticate everything -landscape, animals, plants, imposing standards of co-habitation - built surprising Megalithic monuments to mark out their territories and which, oriented towards the stars, also acted as temples and tombs. Dolmens, standing stones... enclosures built with immense slabs by inexplicable means. Thousands of "mamoas", "areas", "circos" and "eiras" which folklore has attributed to "fadas", trasnos" or "mouros "... understood to be mythical beings of the past, associated with magic, alchemy or treasures. The inquisitive visitor, discovery after discovery, will be eternally amazed by the humanism and tremendous knowledge of the builders of Galicia's past.

In Cabaña de Bergantiños, which takes us along the "Costa da Morte" (Coast of Death), is the parish of Borneiro, with its Celtic town or castro, which was excavated and known to have been inhabited from the 6th century RC. up to the Roman period, and the dolmen of Dombate, immortalized in song by the Romantic poet, Eduardo Pondal, composer of Galicia's anthem. Its builders assumed the significance of sunset in the west. Likewise, between Buiio, traditionally a pottery-making town, and Malpica, in the parish of Cerqueda, is Pedra da Area, or in Baiñas A Casa dos Mouros, Area da Piosa in Zas, Cova da Moura in Argola de Noia - always with suggestive names.

Following what used to be old roads, and are now modern highways that skirt the sea-line, we come to the lands of Ribeira, on the slopes of the A Barbanza mountains and the A Curota viewpoint. Here, in the parish of Oleiros, we can see the impressive architecture of the Axeitos dolmen. Like in Cures de Boiro A Area do Barbanza and in Todoia, a district close to Compostela, we discover the Cabaleiros dolmen. All locals know of the existence of mamoas, those mounds of earth that may hide a dolmen-like structure related with curious legends. Monuments that we can make out standing up on the horizon over the curved silhouette of the hills, one only has to look at the 0 Bocelo mountains, near Melide; in A Muruxosa is O Forno dos Mouros; like Chan de Arquiña on the hills of Marfn, overlooking the rias; San Cosme de Cela in Mos... In Ourense territory, in the district of Muiiios, we can see the dolmen complex of Maus de Salas looking out over what nowadays is a reservoir.

From this same period, there are some stone landmarks, pedrafitas or menhirs, like the Gargantas in Morana, or the Pedra Alta in Antela de Limia, which originally had some astral significance in agriculture and fertility, later used as marches to outline territory.

The Megalithic builders understood, and passed down to us, an aesthetic comprehension of stone that even now pervades everything. Granite defines Galicia.
