The Velez-Malaga's Holy Week traditions, enjoying the enthusiatic
participation of the population, date back centuries. Holy Week is
undoubtedly one of the town's most important celebrations. The magnificent
processions and their trappings reflect the its rich religious, artistic
and cultural content.
Every year in early Spring, thousand of tourists who have come to
enjoy the beaches as well as other visitors who have come expressly
to see the uniquely moving pro cessions and the beauty of their floats,
witness Velez-Malaga's Holy Week. During Easter Week eighteen penitential
brotherhoods publicly profess their faith.
Twenty five Titular Images make up the most impressively visual catechism
imaginable as the floats, their sublime ornamentation so characteristically
Andalusian, process through the city streets. Indeed the streets,
redolent with the scent of orange blossom and the burning incense
of the passing processions, create a sumptuous atmosphere that overwhelms
the senses. Indeed, these streets are a fundamental element in this
spectacularly moving experience.
