General information
Situated on the eastern part on the Costa del Sol. where the region of Axarquía meets the Mediterranean Sea. you will find Velez Malaga. Midway between cosmopolitan Malaga and Granada, the city of the Alhambra. Velez Malaga is a blend of the charm of the southern towns and the offer found at coastal tourist areas where the beach can be enjoyed all year round. Visitors to this little corner of Andalusia will find the Sierra Tejeda Natural Park. Almijara and Alhama and the lovely towns of Moorish demeanour of Axarquia all within their reach.

The city is located 60 meters high over the sea level, in the fertile plaine of Rio Velez. The river and some tributaries, such as Benamargosa and Iznate, water the land. It is also watered by the creeks Riachuelos, Almayate and Seco. There are plenty of crops in vegetable gardens, and subtropical fruits. The naime of Velez-Malaga seems to come from the Arabic Ballic Malaca, which means rock or fortress.

The Holy Parish Maria La Mayor presides the town; it is a 16th century building, built on the former mosque.

The Neighbourhood of La Villa is the city centre. The architecture is, clearly, of Arabic origin. Four gates surrounded the neighbourhood. Only two remain: Puerta Real and Puerta Antequera. Near the first one we find the beautiful rococo decorateds fountain Fuente de Fernando VI.

We should mention the 17th century church of Convento San Jose de la Soledad, which has been rebuilt as a theatre; El Hospital de San Marcos court and a 17th rococo dressing-room inside the chapel.
