Malaga Villages Information: VALLE DEL GUADALHORCE

Valle del Guadalhorce

This region is situated west of Malaga City, in a privileged enclave due to its closeness to the latter, the Costa del Sol, and other spots of tourist interest in the province.
Water is the main protagonist in this landscape full of contrasts. Streams and springs crop out of the land and water the fields of citrus fruits which lend their colour and scent to the environment. The scent of orange blossom mingles with that of the Mediterranean aromatic plants which share the mountains and hillsides with almond and olive trees. The local fauna is just as varied, comprising migratory birds, wild goats and birds of pray. This mixture of local fauna and flora is particularly remarkable in spots like Barranco Blanco, el Chorro or the Mijas mountains, in the municipality of Alhaurin el Grande.

The climate and the richness of the land make this region a perfect place to live in. Remains of all the cultures which once dwelt it, from the Neolithic to the present day, are distributed throughout its territory. A melting pot of cultures: Roman, Arabic, Jewish and Castilian, whose influence and mixture have given way to the present customs and traditions. Cultures which left a trace in traditional architecture, a reflection of the close relationship of man and water in constructions such as mills and irrigation channels. But talking about the Valle Guadalhorce implies talking about gastronomy. Diversity and quality are the main features of local cuisine, as well as the use of products from ,its fertile soil. Autochthonous products like seasoned olives from Alora, assorted soups, oil bread rolls, ring-shaped pastry, "polkas" (sponge cakes), ... are proof of it.
Local handcraft is linked to work and life in the countryside: pottery, esparto grass, cane and reedmace are the most commonly used materials in the making of vessels, chairs and all sorts of tools. Wood carving and the elaboration of perfumes and essences are also remarkable.

Most festivities in the local municipalities take place in spring and summer. Starting with the holy Week, a succession of fairs, carnivals and festivals follow throughout the region; the Verdiales Festival of the three crosses and the Holy week and pilgrimage of Coin, Valle Abdalajis, Pizarra and Alora are real musts.
