Torrox History
In the North of the village, in a place called Los Caserones, they
have found neolithic remains. It has been possible to demonstrate
the presence of the coast. Nevertheless, the fisrt most important
historical remains correspond to the Roman times. In the area of La
Punta de Torrox, close to the lighthouse and Torrox river mouth, they
have found housing ruins and a few thermal baths. Part of this necropolis
is in the museums of Malaga and Barcelona.
During the Arabic occupation, Torrox stood out as handcraft and silk
commercial center. Torrox's urban structure is totally Moorish, with
narrow steep streets. In them we can find beautiful corners with the
tipically contrast between the whitewashed walls and the flowerpots.
Also it is wort visiting the church of San Roque, of the 16th century,
and herrmitage of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, of Mudejar
style, founded by the Fathers Minimos of San Francisco. The Aduana
or Casa de la Moneda (customs house), of the 18th century stands out
as an important building during trading times. La Casa de la Cultura
(the culture house), of 1963, housed King Alfonso XII during a visit
he paid after a earthquake that damaged part of La
Axarquia. |
