Costa del Sol information: TORREMOLINOS |
Torremolinos History
It is the youngest village in the history of Malaga, even before becoming
a part of Malaga's province. Man had already been here approximately
150,000 years ago, as remains found local caves and grottos show.
Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs passed through these coasts.
In this land they found all they were for in those times.
The first news we have is from 1489, during the last years of the
Christian reconquest. After conquering Malaga, in the allotment of
the land, we read about some tower mills, which remainded part of
the territory of what today is Alhaurin de la Torre, together with
Churriana. Nevertheless, in 1502 it became part of Malaga city, by
the name of Las Torres de Pimentel. In 1745 we first hear the name
of Torremolinos (meaning mills tower).
At the end of the 50s, what used to be a fishermen's small village
made up by the neighbourhoods of San Miguel and Calvario street, El
Bajondillo, and La Carihuela, began an economic and urba boom, which
turned it into one the busiest tourist resorts nowadays. It is especially
around the neighbourhoods of El Bajondillo and La Carihuela, that
the tourist industry has developed, due to their exceptional beaches,
which are known throught the world.
