EL COMPAS VIEW POINT AND SHRINE OF THE VIRGEN OF THE ROCK
- This shrine holds the image of the Virgin de la pena, the patroness
of Mijas. It is set in the rock by the El Compas vantage point. According
to legend the image of the Virgin was hidden during five centuries
and was found in 1586 by a builder, the father of two shepherd boys
who were led to the hiding place by a dove.
MINIATURE MUSEUM "CARROMATO DE MAX" Juan
Elegido Miranda was a world wide famous hypnotist known as the Professor
Max who decided in 1972 to exhibit his collection inside a caravan.
This miniature museum is one of the most important museums of its
kind and has pieces from over 50 different countries.
THE CONSTITUTION SQUARE - The marble cutter Galiano
made the present fountain and benches from the marble rocks that were
left by the flood of the 2nd of November of 1884.
BULLRING - The bullring was built in 1900 through
the many petitions made by the villagers. It was inaugurated that
same year on the 8th of September, the patron saints day of the Village.
A curiousity of the bullring is that it is a oval shape. Telf.: 952

FORTRESS WALLS, VIEW POINT AND GARDENS - Remaining
walls of the fortress that protected the village. The gardens have
been designed to have flowers all year round and the view point is
the prettiest and most spectacular of the coast.
PARISH CHURCH - The church known as the Immaculate
Conception existed as a Parish church before 1492. It was ordered
to be built in 1541 - 65 on the site of the ruins of the ancient Moorish
castle, and one of the castles towers was used as a bell tower, but
was not finished until 1631. It is a stone building with three Mozarabic
naves supported by marble pillars. During the restoration in 1991
- 92 a series of frescos, of the Apostles were discovered on the columns
and they date back to approximately 1632.
FOLK MUSEUM - This museum is ethnographic and shows
the old trades and traditions of the village. There are two antique
olive oil mills, Wine "bodega", Bakery, traditional house

THE SHRINE OUR LADY OF "LOS REMEDIOS" AND BARRIO
SANTA ANA - This shrine, known better as the Santa
Ana Church is from the XVIII century. The square of Los Siete Can
os is in this part of the village. Here you will feel the true feeling
of an Andalusian white village, as nothing has really changed much
in this part of the town.
THE SAN SEBASTIAN CHURCH AND STREET - The shrine
was finished at the end of the XVII century. In 1674 the church was
rebuilt from ruins thanks to charity. San Sebastian street is one
of the most picturesque and photographed streets of the coast.
SHRINE OF THE CALVARIO - It is situated on the side
of the mountain, you go through thick woodland which makes it a popular
walk (follow the iron crosses) It was built in 1710 and was used by
the barefooted Carmelitas brothers for spiritual retirement. The shrine
only opens on Easter Fridays, but its worth the walk just to see the
spectacular view of the coast and Mediterranean sea. |
