Malaga Villages Information: MIJAS HISTORY

Mijas photo

It is believed that Mijas was founded by the ancient Turdetanos from the mysterious Tartessian civilization. The Romans made Mijas a fortress which dominated the coast from its privileged position on the side of the Sierra de Mijas at an altitude of 425 metres above sea level, the Mijas peak rises behind the village to a height of 1.150 metres. The walled enclosure was probably situated where the main parish church and the bullring are today, all accounts agree that it was called Tamisa, later on the moors named it "Mixa", they made the walls higher and more solid and extended the existing urban centre. There are still are few remains of the outer walls of the fortress. In the 9th century when Omar Ibn Hafsun led his rebellion many of the people from Mijas joined forces with him because they were crippled by taxes, this was the case of many other people in different places.

In 1487 the Christian army took the village, five years before the Kingdom of Granada fell. Mijas became a military headquarter during the fighting that followed. Despite their defeat a lot of the Moorish population chose to stay, Christians came from the north to join them and repopulate the area. Mijas was loyal to Queen Juana, who was known as the "Ioca" or mad queen, during the popular uprising of the war of the "Comunidades" or communities and in 1512 in gratitude she gave Mijas the title of "Villa" together with an even more precious reward of being made exempt of paying sales tax. Later on the crown granted Mijas another title of "Very Loyal". The area of Mijas is mostly mountainous with growing developments along the coast and on the gentler parts of the mountain slopes before they plung into the sea. The Pasadas and Ojen rivers cross this area, they join to form the river Fuengirola which flows into the sea almost o the limits between Fuengirola and Mijas: TheMunicipality, one of the largest in the Province of Malaga, with 147 km2 is divided into three urban areas: Mijas, Las Lagunas and La Cala.
