Costa del Sol information: MARBELLA |
Marbella
General information
Recent discoveries indicate that around the 7th century b.c the Phoenicians
settled down in the are a of Rio Real. The Basilica Vega del Mar is
what we have left from the visigothic times.
During the Islamic times, Marbella turned into a walled city. The
Moslems built the castle and walled the city, with a powerful three-gate
fence. Nowadays the castle is still there, but the fende and the doors
are gone.
After the Reconquest an throughout the 16th century, the urban structure
of Marbella experiencies important changes: the center of the Moslem
"Medina" (today's old town), the Plaza Mayor or Plaza Real,
called Plaza de los Naranjos nowadays, and a street leading to Puerta
del Mar. In those times people used to earn their living with the
agriculture and cattle. Sweet wine being famous from Arabic times.
It is only in the 90s, that this town becomes really universal. The
management and the policies of Marbella's Mayor Jesus Gil, in the
latter decade of the 20th century makes an important impact in its
development. Nowadays Marbella is a city desired by all, supported
by investments, with golf courses, new avenues, parks, and awarded
at both national and international level for its safety and cleanliness.
Their fair and holidays of San Bernabe, the city's patron saint, commemorate
the reconquest by the Catholic Kings in 1485. During this week of
June 11th, residents and visitors enjoy all the Andalusian flavour
of one the oldest celebrations on the coast. People put on their typical
customes, walk along the streets, and dance non-stop. Also in honor
to the patron saint San Bernabe, a pilgrimage takes place, and they
take their oxen and horses, offering their food with happiness, and
with great hospitality that people from Marbella have always been
known for.
The celebrations of La Virgen del Carmen are traditional with the
seamen. It starts with a walk along the sea in procession leaving
the Puerto Pesquero (the fishing port) towards Puerto Banus. Highly
decorated ships accompany the procession, making the whole thing very
impressive. The Pilgrimage of Cruz de Jaunar is a 100-year old tradition
where people walk to the cross of San Juan in the middle of the white
mountains, Sierra Blanca, on May 3rd. The Fiesta Toston is very popular.
It is celebrated on November 1st, when all the families get together
in the field, and road chestnuts.
