Today, the village of Iznate is one of the best examples of the spirit of the Axarquia interior. The bell tower of San Gregorio's Church rises over typical Moorish houses of one or two floors. The Church was consecrated in 1505 and rebuilt in 1577. Originally, it was Mudejar style, although the successive reformations gave it a more Renaissance appearance, mainly to the facade, which was reconstructed in the 19th century. In its naves there are some samples or sacred Art as, an image of Saint Francisco of Paula, a portrait dated in the 18th century, which may have been painted by Rivera. The church overlooks the square of the ''Virgin de los Dolores", where there are some mosaics that represent the marquisate of Iznate and the Virgin's image. There are two Moorish water fountains in the periphery of the urban hamlet: the "Moguera" fountain and the "Fountain of the Three Wishes", where you can still practice the old tradition of throwing coins and wishing. But besides preserving the flavour of the oldest traditions, Iznate has modernized part of its essential infrastructure. Its complete Sport Centre "Los Callejones", has facilities for many different sport activities as well as a swimming pool and a cafeteria. The Cultural Centre of the village usually offers all kinds of shows and art exhibitions whilst the Centre for Managerial Initiatives is devoted to encourage and support young people's industrial and commercial projects. Rural tourism is well developed in the area, Witll numerous walking paths and an important network of rural lodgings. |
