Iznate Information - IZNATE TOURISM |

The "Paradise of the Muscatel
Grape" is located 35 kilometres away from Malaga and only 8 from
Velez-MaIaga. It rests on the skirt of the Loma de Barcos that reaches
475 metres high and offers unique spots and spectacular views over
a good part of the Sierra Tejeda, including tlle Boquete de Zafarraya.
In the interior valleys, the small villages seem to be white gems
encased in the Axarquian countryside. We are referring to Iznate,
a small white village with a thousand inhabitants whose steep and
narrow streets keep intact the spirit of their Moorish origin.
The village spreads over sceneriy of slopes and ravines, whose crops
take good advantage of the river that flows gently at the bottom.
The facts that explain Iznate's origin have been lost in the tide
of history. Perhaps it was the Hisn Aute, a castle near which some
historians locate the place of birth of Omar Ben Hafsun, a Mozarabic
commander; or a place called "Sitanar", which was mentioned
in the chronical of Hernando del Pulgar; or the Yniesta that appears
in the distributions of Velez-Málaga in 1488. What we know
for sure is that in 1487, when the area was conquered by the Catholic
Kings it was a big farmhouse.
It is also known that its Moorish inhabitants continued living in
the farmhouse until they were definitively expelled in 1570 due to
their active participation in the rebellion of the Alpujarras.
In 1574 Iznate was repopulated, with 59 families by order of Felipe
II.
During centuries, Iznate had Rights of "Behetria", by which
they could elect their lord. |
