Malaga Villages Information: GUADALTEBA

Guadalteba

The main feature of this region is its environmental diversity, as we can tell from its mountains, dams, river valleys and agricultural plains. Some of these elements, such as the group of dams, the "Tajo del Molino" (the Mill Cliff) or the Gaitanes gorge, are among the most beautiful wonders of Nature to be found in our province. This landscape of scenic beauty provides an ideal setting for the practice of outdoor activities such as trekking, canoeing or climbing.

Inhabited by man for thousands of years, it preserves a very rich historical and artistic heritage, which comprises the cultures of all the civilisations who have left a trace through history, as certified by nearly 500 recorded sites, or the castles, bridges, churches, convents, health resorts, Roman villas, caves with engraved paintings and impressive pre-historical necropolis. All the above can be enjoyed in our wide range of museums and interpretation centres. Their Copper Age idols, decorated Tartessian swords and steles, Iberian sculptures, Roman Imperial portraits or late gothic panels with religious scenes, are magnificent examples of a very rich, varied culture, many of which are sole specimens.

Its delicious gastronomy, with a clear "Andalusi" touch, made obvious by its traditional bakery, is centred around local products. A wide range of cold meats and cheese is particularly remarkable, without prejudice to vegetables from the fertile lands of the region, which can be tasted at the different fairs and open markets held throughout the year. Handcraft products are reminiscent of the old traditions, i.e., the work of esparto grass, wood, leather, or artistic forging. Local celebrations are a great tourist attraction: the patron saint carnivals, the Holy Week, pilgrimages, the asparagus and cheese fairs or "matanzas" (pig-killing day), are an excellent opportunity to get to know the kind, hospitable local people.
