Costa del Sol information: ESTEPONA |
ESTEPONA General Information
At present the town is not only devoted to tourism, fishing is practised
and citrus fruits are grown, with a good annual production, besides
they make ceramics crafts, furniture, forging, etc. There are visits
of interest: the Torre del Reloj (tower clock), of Arabic origin;
La Torre Almenaras (the Tower Beacons). Along 21 km-coast line, we
find seven towers, of Moslem and Castilian origin. They were used
as a defensive mechanism until the 19th century.
The ruins of El Castillo del Inicio (the castle of the beginning)
were important during Omar Ben Hafsun's revolt against the Emires
of Cordoba. San Luis' Castle was built under the orders of the Catholic
Kings at the beginning of the 16th century, in order to reinforce
the walls. It also has a bullring of asymmetric design, by arquitect
Juan Mora Urbano, inaugurated in 1972. It is considered unique in
the world.
As for gastronomy, within what is considered traditional Andalusian
cuisine, the following local specialities stand out: La sopa camprra
(the outdoor soup), sardinas al espeto (roasted sardines), which are
normally had by the sea. Also Estepona has a variety of dishes, such
as sardinas a la teja (tile style sardines), boquerones fritos (fried
fresh anchovies), la galineta, la brotola and especially, gambas a
la plancha (grilled shrimps), pulpo (octopus) and salmonetes (red
mullets).
