Estepona History
Estepona's original name was Astapa, it was given by the Phoenicians,
when they settled in the area fot trading reasons.
There is no doubt that they came to the roman city; it was dominated
by them. A decisive naval combat was fought in these waters to contain
the benimerines invasion, and the Christians won it. After this a
powerful fortress was built in order to defend the coast, and this
way Christian Estepona was born.
It was later submitted to the juridiction of Marbela, under the orders
of D. Juana, when she was a governor of these kingdoms in the absence
of the Catholic Kings. But a royal official letter written by Philip
V, kept in te locatl official files, liberated Estepona fron the jurisdiction
of Marbella.
Some historians believe that the origin of the city is in the Iberain
settlement called Salduba, whereas others think that the city was
founded by the Arabs, and that they called it Estebbuna. |
