General Information
They have found remains of pottery and other items in El Cerro del
Carranque, El Llano de la Virgen, and El Cerro del Aljibe Cistern.
The neighbours of Coin have donated several archaeological remains
which are going to be exposed in a museum still to be built. These
remains found in the village make us think that, due to the good weather
and plenty of water in the area, there were settlers from very early
times. But most historians think that Coin's foundation took place
in the Moslem times, during Omar Ben Hafsum's revolt against the emirate
of Cordoba.
Near the foundations of the Castke Castro Dakwan was built. It is
what we nowadays call the neighbourhood of the Albaizín, the
old city's town. Here the first people to settle down were falconers.
The neighbourhood is surrounded by an Arabic wall. The first population
nucleos was established in it.
It has plenty of mills, which were built taking advantage of the motive
force of the local rivers. This is why this village is linked to the
water. With the Christian reconquest, in 1485, it was destroyed after
the neighbours' strong resistence. Dakwan's former mosque was turned
into the first church, Santa Maria de la Encarnación. Soon
after, the Catholic Queen ordered another church, San Juan Church,
to be built on the frounds of a moslem castle. The people of Coin,
have great faith in the Virgin of Fuensanta, patron of this village.
Every year, in July, thousands of local people and people from other
places, come in pilgrimage.
In the suburbs many convents were built for the benefit ot the Augustians
and the Trinitarian monks.
We should highlight the role of the bishops of Malaga, who attracted
by the good weather, plenty of water and fertile lands, turned the
village into a place of rest, raising the Episcopal Palace, a very
characteristic building in the villa. We should also mention the "hornacinas"
or niches, where modest images of the Crucified Christ are displayed,
candles and flower branches are added.
The trade of citrus fruits is very important in Coin, as the quality
of oranges, lemons and mandarins is excellent. Oven-made bread is
also very popular, in many cases the dough is keaned by hand and the
ovens are fueled with wood. In the pastry shop you can find the famous
"roscos", a bread-based pastry filled with fig.
