COIN HISTORY |

|
A TOWN WITH SO MUCH HISTORY
Coin's first archaeological remains are the so called "Taller
de Ardite", minerals were extracted and utensils were made in
both the Paleolithic and the Copper and Bronze Ages.
The "Cerro del Aljibe" deposit and its surroundings are
exceptional witnesses of the passage from pre history to history,
from the Catholic period to the first Century AD.
It is supposed that Coin has a Latin ancestor, if not Roman, at least
Mozarabic, according to Ibn Adhari, a Morocan chronicler of the 13th
Century, who called it "Castro Dakwan".
The Christian siege got tighter around the Nazari Kingdom of Granada,
and in October 1407 began the first Christian confrontation against
Dakwan. Dakwan's capture by the Christians was on the 27th of April
1485AD. By 1480 Dakwan was an important town in he Kingdom of Granada.
Its population, the chronicler Valera reckoned to be 3000 inhabitants.
After the capture of Coin, the Catholic King ordered the destruction
of the remains of the fortress. Due to its size and situation, it
was very difficult and expensive to defend.
In 1765 AD king Carlos III, granted Coin the privilege to hold an
annual fair from the 11th to the 14th of August.
Nowadays that tradition is still preserved. The railway to Malaga
was inaugurated in 1913 AD.
Today, Coin is a modern and friendly town whose people show their
warmth and hospitality, whatever your requests might be. The town
preserves its traditions but looks towards the future. |
