LA AXARQUIA |
History
As other regions in Malaga province, Axarquia's history goes back
to Paleolithic times. Remains have been found in different caves in
the mountains Sierra de Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara. The caves El
Higueron and La Victoria in the Rincon de la Victoria, and the caves
of Nerja are a good evidence of it.
Phoenicians, Cartagineses, Greeks and Romans also left marks here.
Many examples of the architectural Moslem art are the result of the
Moslem domination, such as the mintarets in Arenas, Salares and Archez
and the watch towers that exist along the whole coast.
The Crhistian monarches reconquered Lab Axarquia in 1487 with the
help of the rich nobility of Castile. In 400 years of recent history
they hace molded the region, making it a place we know today. In the
interior we have eminently agricultural villages, but the villages
on the coast have been adapting to the new trends. In the last years
the tourist development have changed the drastically.
They have all learnt, in their own way, to keep the rich historical
legacy that the diverse cultures have left them. Their culture is
based on the long historical period the have gone through. It is possible
to see this in their architecture, gastronomy, dances, songs, art,
crafts and agriculture. |
