Arhidona History
There is evidence that Phoenicians, and Carthaginians settled here.
The Romans called it "Arcis Domina" or "The Lady of
the Heights". They valued its strategic, defensive potential,
as it is located on top of a hill, surrounded by walls, and its impressive
slit at the back. Later, in Moslem times, the most splendid, it was
Arjiduna, and became the capital of what is Malaga today.
During the time of Omar Ben Hafsun, it was in the center of revolts
of Mozarabes (Christians living in Moorish parts of Spain), Muladies
(Spanish converted to Islam) and Berbers. During the Taifas Kingdoms,
the capital was transferred from Archidona to Malaga. A period of
decadence begins. Legend tells, with some romanticism, the facts happened
during the Moslem domination in Archidona. The Lovers Rock is well
known. It relates the escape of the young Tagzona and Mamad, after
a long pursuit. Both lovers jump from the rock, which was named after
them.
