of the second defensive belt of Bobastro, capital of the kingdom of
Omar Ben Haftum. It was also used by the Arabs as a prison for captive
Christians. Locally it is said that a secret underground passage links
the castle with the church, formerly a mosque. The
Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption
Built over a mosque which was destroyed after the "Reconquest",
the design of the church was entrusted in 1552 to Diego de Vergara,
architect of the bishopric of Malaga. A coffered Mudejar ceiling of
great value and artistic beauty covers the central nave. Inside the
church there are remarkable images of the Immaculate Virgin (c.xIII)
and Child Jesus the Devout (c.xVIII), in addition to a painting of
the Hermit Saint Paul (c. XVIII). Hermitage of the
Sacred Heart
Located in the higher part of the town, the hermit dates from the
XVIII century, although it is built over an earlier construction dating
from 1521. Once adjoining the convent retreat of the demolished Sacred
Heart, the hermitage has a small choir and bell-tower. Devotion is
offered here to the district's patron saints, Saint Roque and Saint
Sebastian The Shrine of Christ the Saint
This consists of a figure of Jesus on the Cross, situated in the street
Santo Cristo. In the past it formed part of one of the town's fourteen
religious processions, and it remains the object of intense devotion.

Holy Week processions in Almogia retain a series of symbolic
images inherited from the ritual's earliest days - la Magdalena. el
Angel and el Campanillero - which form a focal point of this religious
festival. The figures are auctioned publicly at a general meeting
of the Brotherhoods held on the Wednesday night of Holy Week.

by Navas Parejo) and the Most Holy Maria de los Dolores (created by
Paco Palma) and leaders of the Brotherhood of Jesus. This is followed,
after nightfall, by the procession of the Most Holy Christ de la Vera-Cruz
and Our Lady de los Dolores, preceded by a relic of the Santum Lignum
Crucis (Brotherhood of Christ). The entire town
