Malaga Villages Information: ALMOGIA

Almogia photo

Almogia is well-known for its craftsmanship and is an important producer of hats, baskets, and other products derived from esparto grass, some of which are exported as far as the United States of America. It is recalled locally that the Spanish soldiers in the Cuban War wore hats from Almogia. Such traditional products are still made and sold today. In addition there are some very fine saddlers, expert in fashioning leather to make the best harnesses in the market. Ceramics, wine, almonds, cottage-style bread and a long list of natural products complete the variety of local goods on sale.

The Hins-Xan-Biter Castle
In the days of the Caliphate the castle constituted one of the bastions of the second defensive belt of Bobastro, capital of the kingdom of Omar Ben Haftum. It was also used by the Arabs as a prison for captive Christians. Locally it is said that a secret underground passage links the castle with the church, formerly a mosque.

The Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption
Built over a mosque which was destroyed after the "Reconquest", the design of the church was entrusted in 1552 to Diego de Vergara, architect of the bishopric of Malaga. A coffered Mudejar ceiling of great value and artistic beauty covers the central nave. Inside the church there are remarkable images of the Immaculate Virgin (c.xIII) and Child Jesus the Devout (c.xVIII), in addition to a painting of the Hermit Saint Paul (c. XVIII).

Hermitage of the Sacred Heart
Located in the higher part of the town, the hermit dates from the XVIII century, although it is built over an earlier construction dating from 1521. Once adjoining the convent retreat of the demolished Sacred Heart, the hermitage has a small choir and bell-tower. Devotion is offered here to the district's patron saints, Saint Roque and Saint Sebastian

The Shrine of Christ the Saint
This consists of a figure of Jesus on the Cross, situated in the street Santo Cristo. In the past it formed part of one of the town's fourteen religious processions, and it remains the object of intense devotion.

Hermitage of the Three Crosses
Built on the boundary of the municipal districts of Almogia, Cartama and Alora

The "Romeria" (Pilgrimage) of San Isidro the Labourer (around May 15th)

The holiday offers the opportunity to enjoy various outdoor activities such as camping. clay-pigeon shooting, games with hoops and ribbons and so on. A substantial livestock fair is held on the days preceding the Romeria.

The Threshing Championship (at the beginning of August)
Every summer the town recalls the traditional method of separating grain from chaff by the ancient art of threshing. Three different activities are judged in the competition: the traditional threshing song, threshing with a roller and threshing with a board. In addition all the onlookers may partake of a large stewpot, pringa (bread dipped in gravy) and gazpacho.

The Festival of the Verdiales (at the beginning of August)
The disctric's famous popular dance festival, with musical groups representing the three local styles of Verdiales.

The August Fair (at the beginning of August)
Celebrated in honour of Our Lady of the Assumption, the August Fair is considered to be the principal feria of Almorgia, although others are held in different parts of the locality throughout the summer: Los Moras (second week of June), Barranco del Sol (last week of June), Arroyo Cache (first week of July), Monterroso (last week of July), and Los Nunez (last week of August).

The Holy Week processions in Almogia retain a series of symbolic images inherited from the ritual's earliest days - la Magdalena. el Angel and el Campanillero - which form a focal point of this religious festival. The figures are auctioned publicly at a general meeting of the Brotherhoods held on the Wednesday night of Holy Week.

In the evening of Maundy Thursday the visitor may witness the procession of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene (created by Navas Parejo) and the Most Holy Maria de los Dolores (created by Paco Palma) and leaders of the Brotherhood of Jesus. This is followed, after nightfall, by the procession of the Most Holy Christ de la Vera-Cruz and Our Lady de los Dolores, preceded by a relic of the Santum Lignum Crucis (Brotherhood of Christ).

The entire town dresses in mourning on Easter Friday to watch the procession of Saintly Burial of Christ accompanied by the Virgin de Concepcion y Lagrimas (Brotherhood of Christ). The end of the Holy week is marked by the procession of Our Lady de la Soledad (Brotherhood of Jesus), accompanied by the Brotherhood's musical choir, who perform a Stabat Mater from the eighteenth century.
