Costa del Sol information: ALHAURIN DEL LA TORRE

General Information

It is the frontier between the valley Guadalhorce, the pit and the city of Malaga. Even though a part of the mointain offers the empty landscape of the quarries, the other one, the most expensive, has beautiful corners, as Alto de Jarapalo, where there are pelnty of oaks, or Tajos de Abarcuza.

Alhaurin comes from the Berber tribe. It is from them that we got the name Alqueria de Al-hawarin (Al-hawarin farm-house), hispanicized as Alhaurín. The original inhabitants belonged to a mining village and there are, still nowadays, many references about products from this land, such as lead, copper, graphite and iron from Llano de la Plata.

The most important archaeological deposits are nowadays in La Alqueria. The archaeological vestiges are abundant but badly preserved: remains of mosaics, linens of walls, ceramics, coins, Roman burials...

In the farmhouse of Mollina is a historical and archaeologically interesting place. There are innumerable remains of a Moslem farmhouse and a tower of the same time.

Also there are some important archaeological deposits in the surrounding areas of the valley - El Cardon and in the surroundings of Casa de Torrijos in Torre-alqueria.

The reconquest of Alhaurin de la Torre in 1485 means a decisive stage in the cristianization. In the allotments it appears with the naime Laolin. It would be later known as Alhaurinejo (Alhaurin the Small), until the 18th century, when the name of Alhaurin de las Torres was imposed because of the towers that it had (those of the old neighbourhood, the gate, El Retiro, and Torrealquería).

The old neighbourhood of Albaicin is another analusian vestige still alive. It has a labyrinthine structure, with cul-de-sacs and alleys, which remind us of the Arabic medinas or town centres.

In 1515 the Convent of San Francisco was founded. They used to venerate the Virgin of Fuensanta (now disappeared). Walking along the streets and neighbourhoods, we find the church, hermitages, houses and other old buildings. It is worth stopping along the way to have a look of them.

The Parish Church of San Sebastian was founded by request of Queen Isabel the Catholic, with the approval of Pope Inocencio VIII. It was built in La Plaza de la Concepcion. However it was later damaged by an earthquake, and it was not finished until the middle of the 19th century, in neoclassic style, a Latin Cross shape floor, three naves nad two belfries, though the niche of Our Father Jesus is of baroque style. The reason why San Sebastian was chosen as the patron saint was due to the devotion of the Catholic Kings for the Saint.

In Arcos de Zapata there are well-preserved remains of what used to be the aqueduct of La Fuente del Rey, from the 18th century. It was built to take water from the spring located in Churriana up to Malaga. Another place of interest worth a visit is La Hornacina del Santo Cristo del Cardon. According to the tradition a miracle happened in 1484, during the Castilian conquest. A wood crucifix saved a Christian solder from death. Its current location is in Los Callejones (the alleys) and you can see it on Holy Wednesday evening in procession.

Leaving the town centre and going towards Alhaurin el Grande, you will find the Royal Society for Shotting of Pigeons (jarapalo) and the modern golf course Lauro Golf.

In gastronomy, we can mention arroz con castañas (rice with chestnuts), a local dish during the Holy Week and winter. Soups, gachas cachorreñas (a type of pourridge), and the cod salad are all typical. The local holidays are San Sebastian on January 20th, and La Virgen de la Candelaria, on February 2nd. Bread in the shape of doughnuts are offered to the Virgin. One of the most important Flamenco Festivals in the province, La Torre del Cante, takes place during the Fiestas de San Juan.
