Costa del Sol information:
ALHAURIN EL GRANDE |
General information
It is located at the food of the north slope of the mountain of Mijas.
The village faces the valley of Guadalhorce. Its rich landscape includes
rich gardens of citrus fruits, fruit trees and vegetables, besides
fields of olive trees and of cereal. The main river is Fahala, formed
by the sources Jurique and Las Torres. The River Rio de las Pasadas
is formed by the white cliffs. Waterfalls and lakes make this rural
landscape beautiful.
The town's origin has been largely discussed along history. Plunio
indicated vestiges that testify that there was human presence in Neolithic,
Iberian, Greek, Roman and Visigothic times (statues, capitals, coins
and stone tablets, among other remains).
The Romans called it "Alhaurin" and the Catholic Kings called
it "Grande" (big), to distinguish it from the nearby Alhaurin
de la Torre. The meaning has been translated as "Allah's garden",
the pit or the valley, or even "the free ones". The Catholic
Kings conquered the town in 1485. It was then incorporated to the
Crown of Castile. During the 19th century many wealthy families of
Malaga chose it as a holiday place. |
