The first record of a Sevillian presence in
prehistory is the Carambolo treasure, a Tartesso funeral dowry
of 21 pieces of gold from the seventh century BC. Four centuries
later, the Scipions and Julius Caesar arrived and set up camp
in the environs of the indigenous population, marking the beginning
of the great Roman Hispalis. During the Visigothic era it was
the cultural centre of Hispania. Arab splendour came with the
Taifa kingdoms and the Almohads, in the eleventh and twelfth
centuries. The city was conquered by St Ferdinand in 1248. In
1503 Seville succeeded in being awarded the monopoly for trade
with the Indies, ushering in another prosperous era during which
it was the largest city in Europe, with 150,000 inhabitants.
The Baroque school of Seville led to the construction of sumptuous
buildings of great beauty. In 1987 UNESCO declared the Cathedral,
the Archivo de Indias and the AIcazar as World Heritage sites.
