The beautiful sight of the orange trees in
blossom with their magnificent scent heralds the arrival of
spring, the ideal season to discover Seville. A few months of
excellent weather in which the capital city hosts most of its
festive and cultural events.
EASTER
The monumental streets of the Roman Hispalis provide an incomparable
setting for the Easter celebrations during which thousands of
devout locals take to the streets to watch floats or pasos bearing
effigies which represent the different scenes of Christ's Passion.
The pasos are carried bycostaleros who move rhythmically, following
the sound of music, and accompanied by nazarenos. Each brotherhood
carries their images out in a procession which goes all the
way to the Cathedral, from where they return to their respective
churches.
APRIL FAIR
The event par excellence in April is the Feria which is famous
for its alumbrao (the lighting of thousands of light bulbs which
marks the beginning of the event), the pescaito frito, the spectacular
horse-drawn carriages which parade around the feria site, the
colourful casetas (large hospitality marquees), the flamenco
dresses and, above all, the lively enjoyment of the people.
A little later. decorated balcanies mark Corpus Christi, and
it is not long until the rolling sound of the drums of the rocieros
mark the beginning of the religious pilgrimage to the shrine
of El Rocio, whilst the trianeros are already getting ready
to celebrate July's popular Vela de Santa Ana.
CULTURE
ON STAGE
The large theatres of the capital celebrate a series of international
musical and dance festivals, opera seasons with the best tenors
and sopranos in the world, and numerous events in the world
of cinema. Examples include: the Evenings in the Gardens of
the Real Alcazar, a musical season covering various periods
from Mudejar to baroque staged in an incamparable setting, the
Territorios Sevilla International Music Festival, the Antique
Music Festival, the Flamenco Biennial, Seville's Festival of
Film and Sport, the Otoño Clasico season of classical
music, and the International Festival of Contemporary Dance.
