MADRID Information: MONASTERIO DE LAS DESCALZAS REALES

Juana de Austria, daughter of Carlos V, turned the palace where she was born, which belonged to her father's treasurer. into a convent for Franciscan nuns of the Poor Clare order.
Only a few parts remain of the original building, such as the staircase, the courtyard, the convent gatekeeper's apartment and some rooms.

The Queens of the House of Austria lived in the convent, as well as the royal children, when their parents were away, almost like an extension of the Fortress (Alcazar). It is still under royal patronage and belongs to the national heritage. When the Bourbons arrived, the queens stopped living there, but the convent would remain under royal protection up to the present day.
It contains some very important works of art, since the novices were of royal or noble blood, and gave the convent valuable dowries on entering.

Some of its illustrious inmates were: Juana de Austria, sister to Felipe II and Queen of Portugal, the Empress Marra de Austria, the Archduchess Margarita (her daughter) and Mariana de Austria (daughter of the cardinal-prince D. Fernando).

Real Monasterio de la Encarnación
The outside is extremely simple brick and stone work, which contrasts with the rich decoration inside. Visits can be made in guided groups. The rooms leading to the cloisters hold a modest collection of paintings for visitors to e~oy, the most important being a portrait of Felipe V, a fine St. John the Baptist by Jose Ribera, a Blessed Virgin by Carrerño, and a historical picture: The delivery of the Princesses Ann of Austria and Elizabeth de Bourbon, by Van der Meulen. The sculpture collection includes wood carvings from the school of Gregorio Fernandez, one of which is an impressive Christ lying down, and an ivory crucifix on a mahogany base made by Michael Perronius. In the curio section, it is worth stopping to look at two small display cases depicting St. Antonio and St. Teresa in their cells.
