MADRID Information: NUESTRA SEÑORA DE ATOCHA - LAS SALESAS REALES

Nuestra Señora de Atocha

Devotion to Nuestra Senora de Atocha goes back to the 7th century when an image of the Virgin was found in a hermitage. of which little is known. The hermitage became a great church in the 16th century, with a Dominican convent attached. where all the kings of the house of Austria and the fi rst Bourbons made improvements by offerings and donations. The French arrived and turned it into a barracks. the church was seriously damaged and almost abandoned. Queen Isabel II was anxious to restore worship there. but the danger of the church collapsing was so great that it had to be pulled down. A new church was built under the patronage of Alfonso X III and consecrated in 1926, when the Virgin was worshipped once more. This lasted until 1936, when the church was burnt during the Civil War. The present day church dates from 1951. Nuestra Senora de Atocha has many devotees and was the most popular during the Golden Age. Together with the Virgen del Pilar, these two were the only ones the Moors allowed to continue to be worshipped in public. All the royal houses of Spain have been highly devoted to this Virgin. Isabel II and Alfonso XII were married before her, and many miracles have been attributed to her.

Las Salesas Reales

Doña Barbara de Braganza, wife of Fernando VI, had this convent built as a place of refuge for the Queen Mother, Isabel de Farnesio, for when she became a widow. However, the building served a dual purpose. The king and queen, famous for their ugliness, but also their kindness, knew that they could not produce heirs since the king suffered from a congenital defect that prevented this. If the queen had no children, she could not be buried in the Royal Vault in the Escorial Monastery, and so the monarchs decided to build this monastery as a tomb where they could rest together for ever. He is the only king buried in Madrid, and there are only two queens. Barbara de Braganza and Maria de las Mercedes (wife of Alfonso XII) who are buried in the Almudena Cathedral.
