JAEN Information: UBEDA Information

Ubeda General information

From the parade of the Redonda de Moradores, Ubeda peeks over the Guadalquivir. At the far end, crossing the river, the peaks of Sierra Magina soar into the sky. The Redonda de Miradores leads us, during a pleasant stroll, along the wall of the old fortress. Within this wall resides the capital of La Loma. The Renaissance cherished Ubeda like no other Andalusian city. Its extraordinary artistic and cultural heritage is displayed in all its magnificence in the plaza Vazquez de Molina. Few Spanish squares possess such beauty and harmony. The sacred chapel of El Salvador was constructed by order of Francisco de los Cobos, secretary of State to the Emperor Charles V Within this chapel, in a crypt located beside the main altar, the mortal remains of los Cobos and his family rest in peace. The facade is sculpted with allegorical and evangelical motifs. The interior, designed by Andres de Vandelvira, possesses a beautiful screen, an exceptional altarpiece and a perfectly balanced sacristy. Alongside El Salvador
lies the palace of Condestable Dávalos, which nowadays is a Parador.

Opposite the palace can be found the church of Santa Maria de los Reales Alcazares, constructed upon the first Arab mosque. Its Gothic interior contrasts with the rich style of the facade, where a statue ofla Virgen de Guadalupe, the patron saint of the town, is revered. At a hundred metres from Vazquez de Molina lies the market square, shaded by high trees which borders on one of the doorways of the Gothic church of San Pablo. Not far from here can be found the museum if San Juan de la Cruz and the popular neighbourhood of San Milldn where there is a workshop for potters and sculptors. Other churches in Ubeda are La Trinidad and San Nicolas. In the quiet plaza of San Pedro there is a church of the same name. The Monastery of Santa Clara is nearby, and is the oldest of the few monasteries that remain in the town.

Ubeda has an extensive inventory of the most refined monuments. Next to the puerta de Granada (the gateway of Granada) is the church of San Lorenzo, whose bell tower remains concealed beneath mottled ivy. The magnificent Hospital of Santiago sits at one of the entrances to the ciudad. It is the most dynamic cultural and social centre of the entire province. The stone stairway which is covered by artistic frescos opens out around the beautiful 16th Century cloister, and here too is a chapel which is used for social events and musical performances.
