JAEN Information: LINARES Information

Linares General information

Anyone of the roads leading to Linares are scattered with abandoned mining operations. During many centuries, lead constituted the main wealth of this town. Today, the only remains of that legacy is the skeleton of the derricks and dumps where this mineral was deposited.
The paseo de Linarejos was planned during the height of the lead mining industry, and connects the city centre with the sanctuary of the patron saint and the nearby industrial estates. Halfway along this avenue we find Madrid Railway Station, a remarkable neo-Mudejar building which today houses the cultural centre.

The Santa Margarita bullring is bound to history since the fateful afternoon of 28th of August when the Cordovan bullfighter Manolete met his death after suffering a gonng. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the Eight Gates were a point of intersection. Today, the hustle and bustle of the town are concentrated in this convergence of street corners. Not far from here we find the plaza of San Francisco where there is a church of the sama name. In the plaza if Santa Maria, we find the town hall, whose interior opens onto the patio de cristales (the Crystal Patio). Opposite this building stands the Renaissance church of Santa Maria. Other places of interest are the Marquis of Linares and the palace of the Orozco family, headquarters to the Andres Segovia museum house, the brilliant guitarist who was born in this town in 1894.

Five kilometres away from Linares we find the archaeological site of Castulo, the original Iberian-Roman town where one walks through the remains of arcades, demolished walls and ancient roadways. The Archaeological Museum of Castulo, located in the centre of Linares, displays a large amount of the riches found in this Roman colony. Bailen is the main heart of communications of the province of ]aen. Edging the borders of two motorways, the town recalls the battle of 1808 in one of its avenues and monuments. This service town entirely crossed by intersections, possesses remarkable monuments such as the church of the Encamación, covered in Gothic domes dating from the end of the 15th Century. The Sanctuary of La Virgen de Zocueta, patron saint of the town, is situated only eight kilometres away from Bailen, in the direction of Andujar.
