La Carolina General information
Few towns in Andalusia can boast a precise birth date consisting of
a day, month and year. However, La Carolina and its border villages
can pride themselves on this unusual occurrence. The New Settlements
of Sierra Morena came into the world on 5th July 1767 due to the initiative
of the illustrious King Carlos Ill. The rationalism of this century
acquired a definite form in the urban planning of the town. The streets
and squares of La Carolina are drawn in a straight line.
In this strict order, monuments as important as the Palace of Superintendent
Olavide, and the church of the lnmaculada, constructed upon the ancient
convent of La Peiiuela, take their place. The historical axis which
forms the streets of Jardines and Real divide the Town Hall square,
descending onto the paseo del Molino de Viento. The Customs House
Square, with its two haughty towers was the original gateway to the
city, the access to the Madrid road.
In the heart of the Sierra Morena lies El Centanillo, the colonial
mining operation from the Roman era. More recently, in the middle
of the 19th Century, this was acquired by an English family who endowed
it with a certain Victorian flavour. Las Navas de Tolosa is a district
of La Carolina, resting on one of the borders of the Andalusian motorway.
Other villages in the region are Carboneros and Guarroman. In the
latter, the Neoclassical church of the lnmaculada Concepci6n (Immaculate
Conception Church) and the ancient granary can be admired.
